Examining how Missouri Supplemental Medicare Insurance Covers Healthcare Costs
Medigap is the term assigned to supplemental Medicare insurance, such as the state approved Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance policies offered by private health insurance companies. These companies and policies offer additional, or supplemental, packages in order to help individuals with the cost of their health care. Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance covers some of the Medicare gaps in Missouri such as deductibles, coinsurance and non-covered services. Deductibles are defined as the amount the policy holder is required to pay for expenses covered by Medicare, prior to payment on the part of Medicare. With reference to the amount of money paid by the policy holder after the deductible is paid, the term coinsurance is used. Lastly, non-covered service is the phrase utilized to describe the services for which Medicare does not pay.

Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance provides additional services and cost assistance. This type of insurance is available to individuals residing within the state of Missouri who are already enrolled in the traditional Medicare program. It is very advantageous for many people to consider, since Medicare rarely covers the entirety of a policy holder's health care costs. Divided into Part A and Part B, Medicare primary programs have gaps in their insurance which can partially be avoided with supplemental insurance.

While beneficiaries of Medicare who are eligible for Medicaid Title 19 do not need supplemental insurance, as their Medicaid will cover the cost of such additional expenses, there are many people who are not privy to the benefits of Medicaid. Some individuals not on Medicaid who may benefit from supplementing their Medicare policies would include those enrolled in government programs, such as QMB and SLMB; non-standardized group retirement policy holders; non-standardized individual Medigap policy holders who were issued their policies prior to a specific date; and standardized individual policies from Medigap which were issued following a specific date. As many Medicare beneficiaries are not eligible for Medicaid or QMB, such individuals in Missouri would be wise to consider Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance policies.

In the early 1990’s, the federal government passed legislation to standardize Medigap policies. This was done through the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990, which went before Congress. While twelve benefit plans were permitted by federal law, states such as Missouri are able to dictate which are eligible for marketing. Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance companies are able to sell all or some of the Medigap plans which are permitted by the state of Missouri. However, the core benefit plan must be offered in all states and made available by any Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance coverage provider.

Some examples of standard Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance include: Part A Hospital Coinsurance for days sixty-one through ninety, Part A Hospital Lifetime Reserve Coinsurance for days ninety-one through one hundred and fifty, three hundred and sixty-five Lifetime Hospital Days beyond Medicare coverage, Parts A and B Three Pint Blood Deductible, Part B twenty percent coinsurance, Part A Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance for days twenty-one through one hundred, Part A Hospital deductible, Part B deductible, Part B charges above the Medicare Approved Amount, Foreign Travel Emergency Coverage, At-Home Recovery and Preventative Medical Care.

The supplemental policies vary to a great extent. It is important for prospective policy holders to examine the different packages carefully and fully to make the most educated decision for themselves. Some of the different points to consider when purchasing Missouri supplemental Medicare insurance include what specific benefits are required by individuals, as well as the costs of benefit premiums and the ability or not to switch back and forth between Medicare Advantage plans.
