| Why A Stairlift Is Essential In Ensuring Independence |
|
There are several different groups that collect statistics on different
conditions and disabilities that people may have. According to the Disabilities Statistics
Center a large portion of the United States
has some form of disability. Stairlift systems within a home can allow these
individuals to safely move between floors, without requiring special assistance
or remodeling of the home.
A stairlift
is designed to allow an individual to simply sit on a secure, safe chair that
is attached to a track. The track itself is attached to the wall and the
stairs, allowing the chair to be raised or lowered along the track at a steady
safe pace. The individual has complete control of the chair and there are
emergency stop features built into the equipment. Since it is self-operating
for the rider, there is no need for anyone to provide support or assistance in
getting up and down the stairs.
In essence all that is required is that the individual is able to lift
themselves from their wheelchair, scooter or mobility device to sit on the
chair. Like a wheelchair there is a fold down footrest, ensuring that the feet
are safely kept on the chair itself. The chairs also have armrests for comfort
as well as a safety belt to keep the passenger in the lift secure. Since the
rate of movement of the chair is slow and steady there is no concern with bumps
or rough movement and the individual riding the chair is very comfortable and relaxed.
When not in use the chair for the lift system folds up flat against the
wall and can be kept on the same level as the individual. This means that the
person can ride the lift from the bottom of the stairs to the next floor, store
the chair at that level and then has it immediately available if and when they
wish to descend.
There are several different models of chairs and lifts to meet each
individual's specific requirements. While most lifts will easily handle weights
of up to three hundred pounds, there are also heavy duty lifts that are rated
for weights of up to 500 pounds. These types of lifts typically mount
differently, with the rider facing down the stairs rather than sideways across
the treads of the stairs.
Power for a stairlift can be in a variety of forms. Many lifts offer
battery power options while some use direct plug into to a house outlet. In
times of power outages or in areas where this is a problem the battery operated
model is an ideal choice. This also prevents any concerns about the rider being
stranded on the stairs when an unexpected type of power outage occurs. Battery units do need to have the batteries replaced
every two years, but they do also charge the batteries continually so they are
always available.
Outdoor stairlift models are designed to withstand the weather, wet
conditions and even snow. It is important to only use outdoor rated models in
areas where the track and chair will be exposed to the elements. By having
indoor and outdoor lifts installed in the home the individual really will have
the freedom they need to move around in their home, giving peace of mind to the
family and a sense of independence to the individual.
