For the Elderly, Stair Lifts May Be a Solution That Can Retain Their Independence

The elderly face many difficult circumstances as they age. Mobility is one. Their bodies are decreasing in speed, and growing old.  They are becoming fragile. Many seniors suffer from hindered mobility and run the risk of falls.  With falls come breaks, which can lead to infections.  Precautions are a must.  They no longer have the security they once experienced while walking and climbing. Climbing a set of stairs, may become a difficult and dangerous task for the elderly.  A stair lifts can give you the security you need for yourself or your loved one.

The most valuable question you could ask yourself when deciding upon stair lifts in your home is, do you want to avoid accidents in your home?  This is especially important for those with mobility issues.  For anyone who is a senior or living with a senior, safety precautions must be taken to avoid catastrophes.  Stair lifts not only give you the security of reaching one place to another safely, it allows the aging to retain their independence; something that needs to be held onto as long as possible.

A stair lift will help the elderly to function fully in their home when climbing the stairs.  Often times this is an unbearable task for the physically challenged.  Stair lifts are for the safety of the physically challenged and to make the life of the elderly easier.  Stair lifts transport the person with or without a wheelchair up and down stairs.  This is something that is allowing many elderly to retain their independence, as they are able to get up and down the stairs.  A rail is set up on the tramp of the stairs and a platform or a chair is attached to the rail.  The person can stand on the platform or sit on the wheelchair, which is attached to the stair lift, and go up or down the stairs.  The device is most often electrical and has different controls to ensure the individual’s safety.

Before deciding on stair lifts, decide whether the user prefers to sit or stand while they climb the stairs. For those who prefer to stand, a perching stair lift would be suitable.  If a person is in a wheelchair, they should choose the wheelchair lift.  For the user that has a stiff knee, a stairlift that faces forward is considered necessary.

Stair lifts are also available for rental.  Should you have questions as to the necessity, rent one.  It is never unwise to be cautious.  As with the purchased model, your stair lift can be professional installed, and is often maintained direct form the manufacturer.

Stair lifts are fitted to the individual.  So, if you are purchasing the stair lift for an adult, it definitely will not fit a small child.  The seat of the stair lift must properly fit the user.

Adding security for those you love is important, especially the elderly.  Independence is decreasing and risk factors are rising.  Simple tasks in daily life can become a threat. Maintaining one’s health is priority at this age.  And, being safe is priority.  There are many different manufacturers on the market today offering 15 – 20 different stair lifts.  To select the right brand of stair lift it is important to know your needs or the needs of the one you love. Be sure to do your research, and you soon will reap the benefits of having a model at home.
